screenshot 1 200x300 Hungry For Hungarian SoupsAs far as home cooking goes, there really aren’t that many people that make soup any more. People are more than willing to grill anything from steak to pineapple and make all sorts of cheesy casserole concoctions, but nobody spends the time these days to let a bunch of ingredients simmer in a pot for an hour or so to create a drool-inducing soup. The art of soup making these days has been replaced by Campbell’s Chunky soup and assorted Progresso variations, leaving us with bland concoctions that have no love to give.

Viki and Joe, a married couple in Budapest and the developers of the app, decided that the world needed real soup and mixed their love of soup and apps into Hungarian Soups. According to the couple, Hungary is a soup consuming nation that starts any traditional three course meal with a hearty soup. Their “national” soup is the world famous goulash (of which there are around 6,000 varieties), but the country is also known for sour cherry soup and a wide variety of bean soups.

Their app doesn’t quite cover every variety of all of their national soups, but it does contain 25 Hungarian soups that have all been tested in their home as meals. Each recipe comes with rich color pictures, detailed ingredient lists, and step by step instructions to streamline the process. Ingredient shoppers will also be happy to find a shopping list function included for added convenience.

With Hungarian Soups you can stop fearing the art of soup making and really dive into some rich Hungarian meals. Now you’ll be able to put away that over-processed can of Campbell’s and make some hearty beef goulash that you know your family will pour over.

All this goulash talk is making me hungry…

As if impulse buying on the Internet weren’t easy (and dangerous) enough already, Amazon has upped the ante by releasing the Windowshop app for the iPad. The free app will allow users to browse and purchase items off Amazon’s online marketplace, and the entire experience has been built from the ground up with the iPad in mind.

windowshop 300x223 Amazon Launching iPad Shopping AppThe app features all of Amazon’s traditional listings, including separating products into Bestsellers, New Releases, etc. The app also allows users to pop up and zoom in on specific products, letting them see descriptions, HD images and user reviews all in one screen. Amazon Prime members will also see which products qualify for the premium service and will be able to take advantage of Amazon’s 1-click checkout, which is both the greatest and most devious invention known to mankind.

This app should be great for all the hipster holiday shoppers who can now whip out their iPad in the coffee shop and order trendy gifts for friends and loved ones off one of the Internet’s most-beloved marketplaces. I assume it’ll also be great for normal busy adults who can now shop during commutes or when on a lunch break, but that’s not as funny a mental image. At any rate, enjoy this super-useful app for all your online shopping needs, just remember where your cutoff point is and don’t go crazy buying stuff you don’t need simply because it’s so darn convenient.

IMG 02941 200x300 iPhone Review: ThatsTheSpiritI have to admit it; I love a good quality beer. I am always looking, comparing, tasting, and enjoying new beers whenever I have the opportunity. The problem that I often run into is finding a great beer in some small brewery tucked away in some small town, and completely forgetting what that beer was a week later. Now, this fantastic micro-brew can be documented on my iPhone thanks to ThatsTheSpirit.

ThatsTheSpirit is a database for the adult beverage. It is easy to document everything from a fine wine to the finest scotch. Long gone are the days of sipping a fine wine, telling yourself you have to buy this when you get home, and then completely forgetting what the wine was. Entering these spirits could not be any easier thanks to the simple interface. Choose from predefined beverage types, enter the name, cost, where you had it, and more into a simple database. You can even attach a photo of the bottle to the entry so you have an easy visual reference. Finding the drink is just as easy thanks to a simple search feature.

IMG 0306 200x300 iPhone Review: ThatsTheSpiritThis is a great start for a spirit database, but there are a few things that would have really made this a superior app. The app may contain the ability to enter in hard liquors and beers, but the setup is most certainly geared to the wine coinsure. Including a line item for who produces beverages would also go miles to increasing the usefulness of this database. Also, being able to modify the price so people can know it was $10 for a four pack of beer, and not just a generic $10 entry would really help with budget conscious shoppers. The last bit that could really use a modification is the ability to edit drink types, as the predefined list is fine, but it is not comprehensive by any stretch.

This is a good start to helping you track those fine adult beverages, but it is not quite the comprehensive app some might hope for. It is worth picking up if you enjoy a wide variety of drinks and hate forgetting them at a later time; just know there are some constraints you will have to work around.

The story of the creation of Fridge Police started with a simple problem that David Jack often ran into. “I would find a moldy container in the back of the fridge and would wish that there was an easy way to keep track of how long something has been open in my refrigerator.”

IMG 0470 200x300 Fridge Police ReviewInstead of acting like a typical person, he decided to take it upon himself to create an app that could track all the items that he bought. With his app he would be able to account for any item in his fridge, ending his (and everyone else’s) long standing food expiration problem.

The app that he created, Fridge Police, is a nicely organized app that lets you easily add items to your “My Items” list to be tracked by the food calendar. As your food expires, the app lets you know via push message so that you can dispose of it easily, or at least have the ability to eat the item as it’s getting near expiration.

Adding items, the key to the apps success, is a bit trickier than it should be, though. The app has an included barcode scanner that detects most big brand items, but if it’s not detectable (like most of the items in my fridge), you have to go into manual entry. There is a “Quick Add” option, but it just has a few basics (milk, soda, bread, cheese, eggs). To me, and I’d bet most of the app using population, manually adding each item of food you open can quickly become a tedious process.

To be successful, the app really needs to add a few things. For starters, the quick add list needs to be editable, and all apps that you have manually entered should be instantly shot over to the quick add list for repeat purchases. Also, you should be able to edit the expiration date on quick add items, because not all items (i.e. milk) goes bad at the same rate. Most importantly, the barcode scanning option needs to find way more items than it does. While it’s great to find most big company items, there needs to be much more support for regional brands. Finally, the barcode scanner itself needs to take its time. Maybe it does indeed scan the barcodes correctly, but it seems to me that the scanner just quits the second it gets a peek at an barcode. Even if it is processing data that fast, make it take a bit, just so I don’t think the app is giving up on me.

The goal of the App Store, from its creation, was to have it be filled with a bunch of apps that would make people’s lives better. Apps like Fridge Police should definitely be rewarded for ingenuity, but they need to have better execution if they want to hit the big time. Given some updates, Fridge Police could be a real winner, but at the moment it would almost be easier to read the expiration date right off the container.
