epic fail 186x280 Epic Fail App Review–A Good Collection of FunnyHappy Thanksgiving to all the United States readers out there, and assuming you can be persuaded to step aside with your Thanksgiving festivities for a minute, it’s time for our weekly foray into Apple‘s App Store to see what they’ve got for us, and we’ve got something different for you today, Epic Fail.

Epic Fail is a collection of pics celebrating that grandest of Internet phenomenon, failure. From Spider-Man attempting to stop The Hulk with a burst of webbing to the chin to a man dressed as a big baby, it’s all about the fail.  Well, no, not really–it’s also about the win. There will be a variety of win pictures here as well, including a real doozy of a picture in which a dog sweeps up his own poop in a backyard.

The problem here is that it’s just a collection of pictures, and you can’t even see them without internet access. Considering that your iPhone and iPod touch already has access to series of photos like Epic Fail–I Can Has Cheezburger, for one, and of course the hive of scum and villainy that is 4Chan–via the Safari browser, it’s hard to see where the value would be in the Epic Fail app if it weren’t for two things: one, the app still has plenty of funny pictures, and this is awesome. Two, the app is free. Underwritten by advertising that doesn’t get in your way, the Epic Fail app should get a lot of people’s attention, and make them laugh, which is always worthwhile.

Funny pictures are great no matter where they come from, and thus, the Epic Fail app is well worth your time.

The Good

A huge display of both fail pics and win pics

Easy navigational interface

Unobtrusive advertising

The Bad

Requires net connection to use

Just a picture viewer, in the end

Score 7 / 10

New day, new update in Cydia: Mobile Substrate. If you are not familiar with it, Mobile Substrate is a support framework, used by iOS projects such as WinterBoard, Five Icon Dock and ultrasn0w.

Unfortunately most mobile substrate extension won’t work on iOS 4.2. You will need to wait for devs to update their stuff, and most of them will do so by the time a new jailbreak will be released. There are a few unofficial ways to jailbreak your iOS devices on iOS 4.2 at the moment, but we don’t recommend you to use them. Just be patient….

Today we’ve got something a little extra interesting for you–a little something from our new friends out at Proporta, who sent on a variety of interesting things for us, and the first is the Proporta Aluminum Lined Leather Case for the Apple iPhone 4. However, I should make clear that it does do a bang-up job with the iPod Touch, as well, and most any comparably sized device (a Sony Walkman, for example) should do here as well.

The Proporta Aluminum Lined Leather Case is pretty much what it says on the box. It’s a small leather case, about the same size as your standard iPhone, and you insert the phone (or comparably sized item) in the top, where it is protected by an outside layer of leather and an inside layer of aircraft-grade aluminum covered over by some kind of fabric, I can’t tell which. It even comes with a lifetime warranty, and one other feature, a pull tab that allows you to instantly disgorge the stored item from the case simply by pulling the tab.

When I showed people how this worked, they were amazed. Everyone thought mostly the same thing–you stick your iPhone in there, how do you get it out? A lot of pinching and struggling, right? No, no–just pull that red tab (pictured below) and your iPhone just slides right out of the case. I’ve been using this to transport around my iPod touch and I tell you it works just as well. It reduces the smudging on my screen (it even cleans it, just a little, with that in-out motion working almost like a screen polishing action) and keeps it safe as well. I’m really very impressed with this–the lining is even pinstriped for that added note of largely unnecessary luxury.

High quality materials, an innovative little pull tab for removing your hardware, and an absolutely fantastic look make this a phone case you’ll definitely want to have. In fact, there’s only one downside to this at all, the fact that they’re asking $43.95 for one of these.  That’s probably a whole lot more than you’re going to want to pay for a cell phone case, but still, if you want top notch in your casing, well, this should definitely be in the top ranking.

The Good

Incredible design

Beautiful workmanship

Solid screen protection

The Bad

Limited in scope (only works with certain devices)

Fairly pricey for a cell phone case

Score 8 / 10
