With all of the different software outlets currently on the market it’s almost becoming hard for developers not to make money. Some of the most popular application stores include the iOS App Store and the Android Marketplace. However, both of these aforementioned app stores are currently for mobile platforms meaning developers who with to produce software for desktop platforms (like Windows, OS X, Linux, etc.) need to seek other ways.

Luckily, we’ve known for quite some time that Apple would be going on to release an OS X App Store that would give consumers easy access to software and developers easy access to consumers. This App Store is set to work just like the iOS App Store where Apple will offer the products and take a cut of the profits.

If you were wondering when this App Store would be going live you will be happy to hear that the day has come and the OS X 10.6.6 update has been pushed out complete with the OS X app store. While there is a whole slew of software currently available (like Apple’s iWork suite and Autodesk Sketchbook Pro), I’m just waiting for some Angry Birds.

Apple’s Mac App Store Opens for Business

CUPERTINO, California—January 6, 2011—Apple® today announced that the Mac® App Store℠ is now open for business with more than 1,000 free and paid apps. The Mac App Store brings the revolutionary App Store experience to the Mac, so you can find great new apps, buy them using your iTunes® account, download and install them in just one step. The Mac App Store is available for Snow Leopard® users through Software Update as part of Mac OS® X v10.6.6.

The Mac App Store offers apps in Education, Games, Graphics & Design, Lifestyle, Productivity, Utilities and other categories. Entirely new apps, as well as current Mac favorites, are available from developers such as Autodesk, Ancestry.com and Boinx. iPhoto®, iMovie® and GarageBand® apps from Apple’s popular iLife® ‘11 suite are available individually in the Mac App Store for $14.99 each, and Pages®, Keynote® and Numbers® apps from iWork® are available for $19.99 each. Aperture® 3, Apple’s powerful photo editing and management software, is available for $79.99.

Wyse Technology recently launched the free edition of their popular app PocketCloud for the iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch. Now users can access their home or work computers for free, regardless of what kind of operating system they are on.

“We first released PocketCloud a year ago based on demanding enterprise and IT Professional requirements.” says Daniel Barreto, general manager of the Mobile Cloud Business Unit at Wyse. “With the launch of this new free version we are extending the benefits and capabilities of PocketCloud to any iOS user, while creating a simple and polished user experience tailored to the consumer market.”

As expected, the free version of Pocket Cloud does miss out on some features that the ‘Pro’ and ‘Premium’ versions have, such as Retina Display support, contextual auto zoom, 3G video streaming, and VGA video out, as well as the ever so pesky ads, but at the price of nothing it’s hard to complain.

Research in Motion (RIM) has long been the go-to company when it comes to enterprising handsets with their BlackBerry line up largely leading the pack. Unfortunately for them, stark competition from both Android and iOS has seen their marketshare drop considerably with business people considering Google and Apple’s alternative as viable options. To keep up with the pack, RIM has released their BlackBerry 6 mobile operating system with an updated user interface and stream lined set-up process.

While BlackBerry 6 has been out for a while we’ve yet to see it get released to a great deal of BlackBerry handsets. Luckily, it was just announced today that Sprint has begun pushing the BlackBerry 6 update to both Curve 9330 and Bold 9650 owners.

Of course, to actually grab the update you’re going to need to sync your device with the BlackBerry Desktop Manager application but once you do that you’ll be smooth sailing. Head here for more information.
