The iPhone, iPad and iPod touch are amazing devices that do what they were made to do rather well. However, thanks to Apple’s App Store a whole range of additional uses have been made for the devices that even Steve Jobs never could have thought of.
One such application is the Square Mobile Payment System. This application comes bundled with a small magnetic strip reader that you plug into your device’s headset jack for reading credit cards. Couple this with the Square application and you’re able to accept payments on the go wherever a cell phone signal is present. If you’re a salesman who frequently travels, the benefits of such a system are evident.
Howevre, Square seems to have ran into some problems that involved “credit processing and risk issues”. Luckily, the company has seeemingly remedied the problem as a Square employee has announced via the support forums that they are once again sending out the card readers to those who apply.
Anyone out there try the Square payment system? If so, let us know how it goes as we are quite curious.

Just as we’d heard it would, AT&T has officially launched version 2.0 of its iPhone app for U-Verse TV customers. Now dubbed U-Verse Mobile, it still allows users to manage and schedule DVR recordings on the go, but now has an updated UI, a favorite channels list, and most notably will allow users (with the U399 or U450 packages) to download a limited selection of shows directly to their phone. While that should make it easier to catch up with Lost, Grey’s Anatomy or whatever other shows AT&T makes available while on the subway or otherwise out of streaming reach you won’t be downloading your own DVR recordings, and you won’t downloading any of them over 3G since that’s WiFi only. While AT&T is loudly proclaiming it’s the first to allow downloads, by comparison Dish already lets users Sling whatever they want from its 922 — if they can get it to work right now. Check out the press release and a quick video demo after the break if you’re still not exactly sure how all this will go down, or just go straight to iTunes and grab the free app right now. Blackberry Torch fans should keep an eye out too, since a compatible version is on the way — no word yet on Android or webOS.

We love Android‘s 24-hour app return policy, so when we heard about Apple opening a “Try Before You Buy” section in the App Store, we grabbed the closest iDevice in our proximity to see what exactly was up. Only, it isn’t exactly what we expected given the name. Located under Features -> Free on the App Store, the new section serves only to highlight the free / “lite” edition of apps with premium older siblings. A smart and organized section, sure, but the for-pay programs without a demo will still be a risk your iTunes account will have to take. Them’s the breaks; might as well add it to your personal iOS 5 wishlist alongside widgets and a new notification system.

Now that the SlingLoaded ViP922 DVR is actually available from Dish Network it’s ready to offer more features from the Sling Mobile side of the menu, with plans to add free live TV (or recorded DVR program) streaming to its own mobile apps. Right now, the iPhone and recently released iPad app (Android version due in October) just let the devices control the box and view listings information, but after an update in September it will offer similar functionality to the $29.99 SlingPlayer Mobile, minus all the IR blasters and potential compatibility issues. The best part? According to the Associated Press all this comes at no extra cost to Dish subscribers, other than the fee for the new DVR or broadband connected 612, 622, 722 and 722k set-tops hooked up to a Slingbox.

In case QuickLaunch and IM+ Lite didn’t please your needs for mobile applications, check out Huddle which is a simple to use online collaboration tool.
In terms of features Huddle offers discussion boards, wikis, sharing documents, project management tools, and being able to set conferences with other users.
The Huddle version for BlackBerry was recently released for free but the only problem is that it comes with a “read-only” permission mode.
