viewsonicviewpad4 ViewSonic ViewPad 4 Android 2.2 Smartphone

ViewSonic is a big name in the display community but they are looking to get into the mobile device market as well. We’ve told you about the ViewSonic ViewPad 7 Android powered tablet in the past but we’ve yet to hear of the company’s smartphone offerings. Well, now that CES has come and gone ViewSonic has come forth to formally announce the ViewPad 4 Android 2.2 powered smartphone.

Pictured above, the ViewPad 4 features a 4.1-inch display, a Qualcomm 1GHz MSM8255 processor and a 5 megapixel camera with 720p HD video recording capabilities. Also packed in is 802.11 b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1, GPS/A-GPS and an HDMI port with 720p HD video out.

Sounds good to me. While there is currently no announcements regarding pricing or carrier availiability, ViewSonic says the ViewPad 4 will drop sometime towards the middle of this year.

Press release included after the break.

androidgingerbread1 Google Releases Android ‘Gingerbread’ 2.3 Source Code – Hackers, Start Your Engines

Developers supporting the various mobile operating systems on the market are crucial to their success. For instance, without developers, Apple’s App Store would never have gotten as popular as it is today as there would be no Doodle Jump and certainly no Angry Birds. Luckily, there are a whole slew of dedicated developers producing software for iOS and Google’s Android is no different.

In fact, if you’re a developer, you will be happy to hear that Google has just got done releasing the Android ‘Gingerbread‘ 2.3 source code to the Android Open Source Project’s official website. The folks over at XDA-Developers are sure to be taking note of this and will most definitely be releasing some hefty custom ROMs for the various handsets currently on the market.

Anyways, like I said, the source code is available now so if you want to grab it head here.

kinstudioclosure KIN Studio Closing Doors January 31st, Say Goodbye to the Microsoft Phenomenon That Never Was

Microsoft is no stranger to the mobile market with their Windows Mobile operating system amassing quite a hefty following. However, now that more modern operating systems like Android and iOS are on the market Windows Mobile has given way to the more advanced Windows Phone 7. During this transition, a smartphone line up existed dubbed the KIN that came in two flavors – the KIN One and KIN Two.

During its first official run, the KIN line up did horribly and barely managed to break even (if it did at all) for the software giant. Not long after many had wondered if the device had been axed, Microsoft went ahead and released the KIN ONEm and KIN TWOm – slight variations of the original run. Unfortunately for the, it seems that these efforts have proved themselves to be unsuccessful. The reason I say this is because word as gotten out today that the KIN studio is now shutting its doors permanently.

Luckily, Verizon will be allowing consumers to trade their KIN device in for a free 3G phone. And for those wondering, this does not mean your KIN will stop working entirely but it does mean the following services will be axed:

-Feed Reader will stop working
-Search Near me will stop working
-Posting Photos to social sites will no longer be possible
-Most pictures currently on Kin will only appear at thumbnail resolution
-Posting to Social Networks will no longer work.
-No comments from the loop
-Social network contacts will disappear.
-Loop will stop to work
-Kin Spot will only send to emails.
-Social networks only accessed from web browser.

androidmarket Android Market User Interface Getting Updated, Finally

Google’s Android may quickly be becoming one of the most used mobile operating systems in the world but compared to a mobile platform like iOS, it isn’t exactly the prettiest. Luckily, Google is doing everything they can to change that by improving the platform’s user interface with each reoccurring release. However, one core component of the platform that is long overdue for an update is the Android Market.

Luckily, it was just announced that Google will in fact be updating the Android Market’s user interface giving it a sleek new look. This includes new things like promoted applications being displayed in a CoverFlow-esque manner along with content ratings getting displayed. That’s not all they are changing as they are also decreasing the time available for a refund from 24 hours to just 15 minutes alongside opening new dedicated categories for things like Live Wallpapers and Widgets.

That’s not all that’s coming but it is coming, and it’s coming soon. We’ll keep you posted and let you know as soon as we get wind that these updates are being pushed out.
