virginmobilelogo Virgin Mobile Capping Unlimited Data Plan at 5GB on February 15th

There was once a time where seemingly every wireless carrier offered unlimited data in one form or another and at the time it seemed quite expensive. However, now that just about everyone is picking up the latest and greatest gadgets wireless carriers are starting to feel the pressure from all of this added traffic. Due to this, most all wireless carriers have begun to cut and/or cap their unlimited data plans. The most recent of such happenings? Virgin Mobile.

It was just made known today that Virgin Mobile will begin capping their $40 per month unlimited data plan at 5GB starting on February 15th. This is quite the bummer as Virgin Mobile’s pay-as-you-go data plans were quite enticing due to the fact that they were, well, unlimited.

Fret not though as if you’re utilizing these plans for business on the go you shouldn’t have to worry. However, if you’re torrenting every episode of House while streaming YouTube videos and music from Pandora you may run into some problems.

I guess the most exciting thing about the Verizon iPhone’s announcement this morning was the fact that you will be able to use your iPhone as a hotspot for up to 5 devices. This means you’ll be able to turn your Verizon iPhone into a hotspot and share your Internet connection with up to 5 devices around you.

Sounds great, right? It is great. Not so great is that the pricing information has been left aside and no one at Verizon deemed it necessary to let people know how much this great feature will cost…

Verizon Mobile Hotspot Prices The Price of Turning Your Verizon iPhone into a Mobile Hotspot

iDB reader soccerkrzy left a comment on the blog with a link to Verizon’s pricing page for the mobile hotspot feature. According to their website, turning your iPhone into a hotspot will cost you an additional $20/month, including 2GB of data, with each additional GB priced at $20.

Yesterday, we reported that the rumor going around was that Verizon would offer an unlimited data plan for $30. This hasn’t been confirmed, neither has the cost of Mobile Hotspot. I guess we’ll find out sooner rather than later, but something tells me that if Verizon didn’t make a public announcement about the iPhone 4 pricing plan, it’s probably because it’s not as good as we’d hope.

Time will tell.

iphone 4 hotspot rm eng Verizon iPhone 4 will have 3G mobile hotspot (update)

It’ll probably be subject to an additional fee as usual, but Verizon and Apple have just revealed that the new CDMA iPhone 4 will act as a mobile WiFi connection for up to five devices. It’ll come with an iOS-specific version of the Verizon 3G Mobile Hotspot that folks have been enjoying on their Droids for many moons now. That should allowing for laptops, tablets and the like to get online via iPhone without a pesky cord, and almost certainly make the long-verboten iPhone – iPad tethering connection finally attainable. Joy to the world!

Update: Verizon called it an app, but getting hands-on we can see that’s not the case at all — Personal Hotspot is built right into the CDMA iPhone 4′s build of iOS 4.2.5. Perhaps we’ll see it migrate to other devices as well?

verizon 3g iphone Verizon reportedly ready to offer unlimited data plans on iPhone

Still not believing that Verizon Wireless will introduce a CDMA’d iPhone for its network tomorrow? We can’t say we’re completely sold either, but it’s getting harder and harder to fight off the emotions pointing to “yes.” The Wall Street Journal has followed up on its earlier reports by suggesting that not only will VZW soon carry Apple’s iPhone 4, but that it will make no changes to its data plans once that happens. Of course, it’s not like anyone actually expected Big Red to do such a thing, but it’s definitely one more reason for heavy users to consider Verizon Wireless over AT&T. Grandfathered customers notwithstanding, AT&T users who buy a new iPhone 4 are hit with a few tiered data plan options, with the largest ($25 / month) being capped at 2GB. With Verizon, $29.99 per month nets you “unlimited” data, though you could run into issues if you routinely suck down more than 5GB — a rather typical ‘gotcha’ in the American cellular space. The real question, however, is this: will the Verizon iPhone be compatible with Verizon’s $14.99 / month (150MB) plan, and moreover, will it ever be upgradable to handle the LTE network we heard oh-so-much about just days ago? Bookmark our liveblog and tune in tomorrow to find out!

Verizon Vs ATT WSJ Reports That Verizon iPhone Means $30 Unlimited Data

It appears that Verizon’s upcoming version of the iPhone 4 won’t have that many distinguishing factors between AT&T’s version from a hardware perspective. Spy shots revealed last week show an almost identical iPhone 4, with only subtle hints at changes with the antenna among other things.

So, how can Verizon make an even bigger splash when it unveils a phone that has been available for over half a year? According to the WSJ: offer $30 unlimited data to spite AT&T’s recent restructuring to its data plans.

If you can remember, AT&T was met with its fair share of criticism when it unveiled new tiered data pricing on the eve of the iPhone 4′s launch. AT&T no longer offers unlimited data to new subscribers; the most you can score is a $25 2 GB plan.

Now, Verizon is gearing up for what will undoubtedly be a hilarious PR campaign against its arch-rival….

ATT Data Cap WSJ Reports That Verizon iPhone Means $30 Unlimited Data

Although Verizon itself has hinted at the industry’s need to shift to tiered data plans in the past, it appears that it’s prepared to eat those words, at least for a while. That way, there can be that true distinguishing factor between AT&T’s iPhone, and Verizon’s.

It’s actually an interesting predicament for all three parties, Apple included. Apple can’t really appear to be on Verizon’s side, because it still has a large partnership with AT&T. Verizon can’t call AT&T’s version of the iPhone out for its antenna deficiencies because that would make Apple look bad.

Because of these factors, it’s evident that Verizon will be willing to eat the cost of $30 unlimited data in the meantime, in an effort to mount a good PR campaign. Perhaps in the process they can lure ones away from AT&T, or at the very least, make up the minds of quite a few fence sitters.

Verizon has scheduled an event this Tuesday, which is all but confirmed to be for the announcement that customers in the US will now have another carrier option when it comes to the iPhone.

Hopefully this increased competition will mean lower prices for all involved. Does this news change your thoughts about switching?
