Verizon iPhone 4 hands on side by side top 1 slashgear1 580x266 The Verizon iPhone 4, What’s Changed?

Wondering what the differences between the Verizon iPhone 4 and the AT&T version are? Well maybe we can clarify a few things for you. For starters, let’s talk appearance. The volume and ringer mute buttons have been moved, to accommodate the new antenna design (see extra notch above mute button). Current bumpers and cases with just a hole for the side controls will not fit the Verizon iPhone 4 model.

Now as far as the internals go, the 2 models are almost identical, save for the obvious fact that the new Verizon model will have CDMA chipsets and AT&T models use GSM technology. For those not so tech savvy that means that you will be unable to use an AT&T version of the iPhone on the Verizon network.  And in case you haven’t heard the bad news, CDMA also means that you are unable to be on the phone and use data at the same time…

And finally the software. The Verizon iPhone 4 will launch with iOS version 4.2.5 and of course the popular mobile hotspot feature. AT&T model phones are expected to receive the update to incorporate that feature but a release date is not known yet.

It’ll be interesting to see what these differences will mean to AT&T customers interested in rolling over to the Big Red network. Will the cost of new phones and accessories or the loss of the ability to talk and browse the web at the same time keep many AT&T users who were sick of the network issues from switching? Will it keep you guys from switching?

iphone 4 hotspot rm eng AT&T evaluating support for iOS Personal Hotspot, no plans yet

Although you’d think AT&T would be all over the Verizon iPhone‘s new personal hotspot feature if only just to keep feature parity with its biggest competitor, the carrier is taking a more measured approach — an AT&T spokesperson just told us that they’re “evaluating the feature, but have no plans to announce at this time.” Given that the iOS 4.3 beta just brought hotspot support to the GSM iPhone, we’re guessing that the holdup is more tactical than technical — Verizon still hasn’t announced its iPhone data plan pricing or hotspot tax, and we’re assuming AT&T’s just waiting for some numbers before announcing support sometime around, say, February 10th. We’ll see.

P.S.- We’re also thinking it would be sweet it AT&T supported WiFi hotspot with 3G iPad and its contract-free data plans, but we’re just wishing one wish at a time here.

I guess the most exciting thing about the Verizon iPhone’s announcement this morning was the fact that you will be able to use your iPhone as a hotspot for up to 5 devices. This means you’ll be able to turn your Verizon iPhone into a hotspot and share your Internet connection with up to 5 devices around you.

Sounds great, right? It is great. Not so great is that the pricing information has been left aside and no one at Verizon deemed it necessary to let people know how much this great feature will cost…

Verizon Mobile Hotspot Prices The Price of Turning Your Verizon iPhone into a Mobile Hotspot

iDB reader soccerkrzy left a comment on the blog with a link to Verizon’s pricing page for the mobile hotspot feature. According to their website, turning your iPhone into a hotspot will cost you an additional $20/month, including 2GB of data, with each additional GB priced at $20.

Yesterday, we reported that the rumor going around was that Verizon would offer an unlimited data plan for $30. This hasn’t been confirmed, neither has the cost of Mobile Hotspot. I guess we’ll find out sooner rather than later, but something tells me that if Verizon didn’t make a public announcement about the iPhone 4 pricing plan, it’s probably because it’s not as good as we’d hope.

Time will tell.

iphone 4 hotspot rm eng Verizon iPhone 4 will have 3G mobile hotspot (update)

It’ll probably be subject to an additional fee as usual, but Verizon and Apple have just revealed that the new CDMA iPhone 4 will act as a mobile WiFi connection for up to five devices. It’ll come with an iOS-specific version of the Verizon 3G Mobile Hotspot that folks have been enjoying on their Droids for many moons now. That should allowing for laptops, tablets and the like to get online via iPhone without a pesky cord, and almost certainly make the long-verboten iPhone – iPad tethering connection finally attainable. Joy to the world!

Update: Verizon called it an app, but getting hands-on we can see that’s not the case at all — Personal Hotspot is built right into the CDMA iPhone 4′s build of iOS 4.2.5. Perhaps we’ll see it migrate to other devices as well?

vzw iphone 600 rme Verizon iPhone first hands on! (update: video)

We just got a look at the Verizon version of the iPhone 4. Guess what? It’s just like an iPhone 4! There’s no custom pre-loaded Verizon software (like VCAST or some such bloatware), just that mobile hotspot tweak in the settings menu. There’s also no Verizon branding on the phone, though that’s hardly a surprise given Apple’s hatred of all logos that aren’t its own. The only real physical difference we can find are those tweaked CDMA-compatible antennas running around the edge — four in all, placed symmetrically and bumping down the volume / mute buttons. Interestingly, the phone is running iOS version 4.2.5, so perhaps that mobile hotspot functionality will make its way over to other iPhones when they sync up on iOS updates. We did try a speed test, clearing the cache and loading various sites simultaneously on the Verizon phone and our AT&T device, and while there were variations in the load times, there were too many external factors to really make a judgment call just yet.
