Dec 22

Last month our Thanksgiving meals were stuffed with lots of deeply discounted apps, and it seems that publishers are getting into the Christmas spirit in much the same way. We’ve got a whole slew of apps available at rock bottom prices just in time for your holiday celebrations. Make sure and act fast though, as many of these apps are available for an extremely limited time.

Also, be sure and keep checking this post regularly, as we’ll be updating all the new deals as they are announced. Much like Santa, we don’t stop working until Christmas, and we’re paid in milk and cookies. Speaking of, if you could leave out some chocolate chip oatmeal cookies that would be delightful.

It goes without saying that the Sentinel series is one of, if not the most successful tower defense franchises in the App Store. Unlike other games in the genre, the Sentinel games actually feel like games that could withstand the test of time on any portable system. They all have excellent graphics, more detailed textures than any other game of their kind, have a wide array of towers and one shot weapons, and most importantly, are challenging.

IMG 0904 300x200 Sentinel 3 ReviewThe team at Origin 8 though had their work cut out for them when they decided to create the third game of the series, Sentinel 3: Homeworld. Not only did they have to match the high bar that they had already put in place, but they also had to exceed their standards enough to keep the tower defense crazies (like me) happy… and boy am I happy.

Before the additions though, newcomers to the game will find the same formula that have delighted the seasoned vets for a few years now. Sentinel 3 is a fixed path tower defense game that adds a few tidbits to the tried and true formula. Instead of just having an allotment of creeps that you can let through, Sentinel gives you a base and an assortment of barriers that you must protect. Protecting these barriers not only prevents the creeps from getting to the main base, but they also act as a great enemy hoarder for your big guns to shoot at. The other addition to the mix is interest, something that many Sentinel players use differently. As you pass wave after wave, the money that you don’t used gains interest, letting you accumulate towers faster than you normally would in a typical tower defense game. The trick is that while you aren’t spending, you aren’t building… and the creeps sure don’t get easier as the games progress. If you plan well enough, the interest system can really be a boon to your bank account.

Not to rest on their laurels, Sentinel 3 adds some major features to the already packed game. The first is a commander unit that can finally do away with the pesky enemy units that find their way into the tiny spots on your walls and wreck havoc. Not just a typical unit though, the commander adds moral to the towers around him and gains EXP in battle, allowing you to upgrade his abilities and add combat abilities between levels. The use of the commander doesn’t effect the game quite as much as, say, the heroes in Warcraft 3, but it definitely adds a welcome RPG element to the game. Also added is the weapon selection screen which makes you buy tower and one time weapon slots for use in levels. From there, you have to make the tough decisions as to what weapons and towers you go to battle with… and if my experience is any sort of indicator, the selection often comes down to trial and error.

If you want to bypass all the RPG elements and just get right into the game with all the weapons, you can play the classic mode which works much like the old Sentinel games. There is also the standard “endless” mode that lets you play with all of your RPG-esque stats from the campaign mode, but in an endless style for Game Center high score glory.

As expected, Sentinel 3: Homeworld is one of the most polished, well designed tower defense games in the App Store. Each of its 20 levels are extremely well crafted, and the additional units, weapons, and RPG elements all come together to create the best game the series has to offer. If you are a fan of the previous Sentinel games or just love the tower defense genre, be sure to pick up Sentinel 3 as soon as you can.

Apparently, it is the thinnest slider messaging phone at less than half an inch. I’m sure you see the QWERTY keyboard, as well as the 3.1 inch AMOLED screen. Other features include a 3 Megapixel camera, voice recorder, plus access to the
AT&T Address Book, AT&T Navigator, AT&T Social Net, and AT&T Mobile Share, as well as a “Drawing Commander” feature for making calls and accessing messages by tracing a pattern across the screen.

You should be able to get the Laser starting October 17 for $99, after a $50 mail-in rebate with two-year service agreement.

Pigeon Squadron is a kitschy game that has you, a pigeon squadron member, trying to protect your kind from those menacing people crawling all over the ground. In order to protect your kind, you must successfully land bird poop on various heads, vehicles, and whatever else your commander tells you to hit.

IMG 00033 300x200 Pigeon Squadron ReviewIn Pigeon Squadron, you are an aerial attack bomber with a birds eye view of the city. The controls are all accelerometer based, so turning your iDevice from side to side turns your pigeon and rotating it forwards and backwards changes your speed. The rest of the controls, such as your poop bombs, are laid out in easy to reach buttons.

At the beginning of each level, you are given a briefing that tells you to go attack something like the “reinforcements” that the humans call “tourists,” and it is up you to attack them with as much gusto as possible. The faster and more efficient you are, the better your medal becomes. If you totally miss the point of the level and go crazy on random people, you lose.

All in all, the game is a pretty fun, lighthearted affair that may or may not have you coming back for more. The concept is fun for a while and the missions are funny, but the actual gameplay is a mixed bag. For one, the accelerometer controls for moving make for some strange playing angles. When you tilt the screen hard to go fast, you really have to move your body around to get a good view of the screen. Also, the whole poop bombing thing can get a bit stale (in comedic effect and gameplay) after a while. You’ll quickly get to where you can time your poop bombs for direct hits almost every time, and the levels get pretty easy after that point.

I guess the real problem with the game, at least for me, is that it isn’t hard enough. There is a shallow learning curve, and once you reach the peak, every level just becomes monotonous. I’d love to see some bird upgrades, or some kind of level up system just to add a spark to some of the levels.

If you’re looking for a fun game to pick up every once in a while, Pigeon Squadron is a good buy, but if you’re looking for a game with some meat, this is not the place to look.
