Dec 22

Last month our Thanksgiving meals were stuffed with lots of deeply discounted apps, and it seems that publishers are getting into the Christmas spirit in much the same way. We’ve got a whole slew of apps available at rock bottom prices just in time for your holiday celebrations. Make sure and act fast though, as many of these apps are available for an extremely limited time.

Also, be sure and keep checking this post regularly, as we’ll be updating all the new deals as they are announced. Much like Santa, we don’t stop working until Christmas, and we’re paid in milk and cookies. Speaking of, if you could leave out some chocolate chip oatmeal cookies that would be delightful.

droidxsystemupdate Motorola Droid X Gets Updated to Version 2.3.340, Not Gingerbread

If you’ve been paying attention you’ll know that today was the day that Google officially unveiled their Nexus S handset alongside Android ‘Gingerbread’ 2.3. You’ll also most likely know that the Android 2.3 update was rumored to be going out for the Nexus One leading many to believe that other handsets would be getting it quite soon.

Well today I’m proud to tell you that the Motorola Droid X is getting updated to version 2.3.340. I’m not too proud to tell you that it’s not Android 2.3, but instead a system update. This update brings with it things like preloaded Adobe Flash Player 10.1 and improved Froyo stability. However, the arguably biggest addition to the update is the Madden NFL game that will be preloaded which is reportedly a Droid X exclusive.

xThe update should be going out OTA now so if you don’t see it yet you should quite soon.

thumpfootballscreen 208x300 Thump Football Puts Your Predictions to the TestThump Football is a true original, so it requires more explanation than your typical iPhone app. Let’s start with what it isn’t: Thump Football isn’t fantasy football, and it isn’t a football video game. It is, however, a fun way to follow a game with friends, online or in real life, and a great way to introduce a spirit of friendly competition to the typically passive experience of watching a game.

Here’s how it works: During any NFL or NCAA game that’s playing live on television, use Thump Football to predict what your team will do next. Choose between options like Run, 1st Down, Sack, etc. For every move that you correctly predict, you earn points. Thump Football knows the likelihood of each play, so the player will earn more points for daring, improbable predictions that come true.

If you’re playing with friends, then the player with the most points at the end of the game wins. If you’re playing alone your score will be rated against other players online.(…)

In an attempt to cash in on the “check in” craze created by Foursquare and its ilk, the NBA has announced Turnstile, a new app which will allow fans to alert their friends when they’re attending a game in person or watching on television. Those who consistently check in may be eligible to receive discounts or loyalty rewards at local venues.

nba split 580 300x168 NBA Letting Fans Check In with Turnstile App“We see location based services as just the tip of the iceberg,” says Bryan Perez, senior vice president and general manager of NBA Digital. “The more we can integrate people’s location information at games, the more opportunities there are for things like sponsorships,” he says, adding there are no sponsorships for Turnstile in place currently.

The move places the NBA in line with MLB, the NHL and some NFL teams who are all using some sort of social media check in platform to increase fan engagement and interaction. While most of these other leagues are utilizing Foursquare for their social media, Turnstile is being built from the ground-up exclusively for the NBA.

The app is planned to launch in concert with the start of the NBA regular season later this month and will be available for free on the iPhone, Blackberry and Android. Just keep in mind that if your Cleveland friends see you checking into a Miami Heat game you may well find your house vandalized or on fire when you return home.

gameloft01 300x265 Gameloft Hits 20 Million SoldGameloft announced today that it has sold a monstrous 20 million apps since the App Store opened in July of 2008. Regardless on your stance on Gameloft and the originality of their titles, this number is incredible.

According to Gameloft, 42 of their 47 iPad and iPhone games that have come out this calendar year have reached the top 5 in the games category with 25 of the games reaching the #1 spot (presumably in their respective game categories. I think Angry Birds has been the #1 overall game since 1906, but don’t quote me on that).

“The first half of 2010 marks a new step for us on the App Store,” declared Michel Guillemot, President of Gameloft. “The launch of the iPad and iPhone 4 has opened new horizons for developers and allowed us once again to transform our consumers’ gaming experience. 20 million paid downloads is proof that our games meet the expectations of our players and we will continue to satisfy them.”

With 100 apps currently in the App Store, each app has, on average, sold 200,000 copies. They seem to be keen on pumping them out at record pace now too, with 15 titles to be released by the end of 2010, including “NFL 2011 HD, Assassin’s Creed: Altaïr’s Chronicles HD, Spider-Man: Total Mayhem HD on the iPad, as well as Dungeon Hunter 2, Gangstar: Miami Vindication, Star Battalion and Modern Combat 2: Black Pegasus (also available on the iPad) on the iPhone”.

Congratulations Gameloft. It’s always nice to see a huge success in the App Store. And please, if you are reading this, I am not so patiently awaiting a sequel to The Oregon Trail. I’m dying here. Of dysentery.
