Last month our Thanksgiving meals were stuffed with lots of deeply discounted apps, and it seems that publishers are getting into the Christmas spirit in much the same way. We’ve got a whole slew of apps available at rock bottom prices just in time for your holiday celebrations. Make sure and act fast though, as many of these apps are available for an extremely limited time.
Also, be sure and keep checking this post regularly, as we’ll be updating all the new deals as they are announced. Much like Santa, we don’t stop working until Christmas, and we’re paid in milk and cookies. Speaking of, if you could leave out some chocolate chip oatmeal cookies that would be delightful.

This is Backbreaker Football 2, and it isn’t like a lot of football apps that we have reported on before like Steve Young football or others like HuddleHub and Yahoo Fantasy Football.
You will notice that the football action isn’t from a bird-eye view camera, but you are actually experiencing it from a first-person point of view from a player. You can play offensive as a runner taking the ball down the field, or as a blocker to the runner. There are spins, jukes, and sprints, as well as other moves that will make certain that you don’t get tackled along the way. You can even get some more points if you showboat at the end zone.
You should be able to purchase Backbreaker Football 2: Vengeance (that is its subtitle) at the iTunes Store now.

Remember way back in the day when Backbreaker Football came out? I sat there with my little antique of an iPhone 3G juking and spinning my way around countless square-jawwed linebacker types on my way to the endzone. At the time I thought that Disinctive Developments had figured out the perfect implementation of the sports genre on the iPhone. Forego all the rules and intricacies that plague touch based sports games and accentuate the things that people really like to do, which is score. No matter what the game, all people want to do is score.
After some time, though, the game got old and I was quickly scooped up by the million other sports games that the iPhone had to offer. Some of them were sports sims and some offered quick glory, but very few offered the originality of Backbreaker Football. What I needed was more Backbreaker action – just different action.
To my delight, Distinctive has released Bonecruncher Soccer to the App Store, providing me with the goal scoring rush that I was longing for. Obviously, this game is a soccer game, but it’s really not so different.
Like Backbreaker Football, it is your enviable task to run your player down the field sidestepping and spinning your way to the goal. The controls are exactly the same (tap to sprint, sideswipe to sidestep, and vertical swipe to spin), it’s just the ending that is changed up a bit. Instead of simply running into the endzone and doing a little dance, you now have to kick the ball into the goal.
Since actually putting the ball into the net is one of the most important parts of the game of soccer, Bonecruncher soccer adds a bit of depth to the shooting experience. If you’ve played target mode in Flick Kick Football, you’ll know exactly what to expect. The game slows down to a pause, allowing you to flick the ball into the goal. There is no goalie (unfortunately), but there are targets in the goal that give you bonus points when you hit them. Just know that if you lazily swipe at the screen you can miss the goal, forcing you to retry the level.
Because the game is so similar to Backbreaker Football, I got bored a bit more quickly than I would have otherwise. As far as gameplay goes, there really isn’t anything new here on offer, and the graphics really don’t look like they were much improved since the old game. The concept of soccer “tackling” is also missed in the game, as players will just collide into you to take the ball. Occasionally an opponent will slide in, but most of the time you just get tackled to the ground. Where is the ref?
If you liked Backbreaker Football and need some new juice, Bonecruncher Soccer will probably do the trick. It doesn’t really do anything different, but it will definitely hold two dollars worth of your attention.

For those of you wanting more soccer action than FIFA 2011, prepare for Bonecruncher soccer!
This is a soccer game that has the player running down a field, with tilting for control. There are also a bunch of buttons for moves and dodges, and finger swipes for other moves. For example, you have to flick your finger in order to shoot a goal. I’m not sure how this compares to other soccer gaming apps like Real Soccer 2010 and Virtual Soccer Ball.
You should be able to purchase it at the App store for about $0.99.

Price: $0.99

iPhone Integration Rating: 3.25 out of 5 stars
User Interface Rating: 3 out of 5 stars
Re-use / Replay Value Rating: 2.5 out of 5 stars
Overall Rating: 2.92 out of 5 stars
Blancspot is an interesting app for the computer era. By interesting, I mean that it is taking what we like the most in our news reading and turning it on its head. It could just be me (I doubt it), but I like to see all of my news at once. The more I can cram onto one page the better, because I want to scan quickly to find what interests me. I feel like there is a reason that CNN.com only has a few big pictures and then lists of the news. It’s for quick absorption of what you like, and an easy pass on what you don’t. If you are going to go to either extreme sides of the news spectrum, I would much rather read Drudge Report, which looks like a bunch of news regurgitated on a screen, than… well, Blancspot.
The word of the day, every day, for Blancspot is “pictures.” In their world, it really doesn’t matter what interests you, if the picture is nice enough, you’ll read. Everything is presented in a slide show format, showing you a large screen sized picture with a tiny blurb, and then it’s on to the next one. Since this is not an RSS reader, and there is no way to really pick and choose what your favorite topics are, you are stuck watching a slide show of what they think is important.
For example, the first thing I clicked on was sports. The NFL season is starting soon (tomorrow at the time of writing) and I wanted to see what news the Blancspot team would have on it. Slide 1, Golf, slide 2, Soccer, slide 3, Golf, slide 4, College Football (close!), slide 5, Baseball, slide 6, Rugby, slide 7, Football… finally! Honestly, why would I ever go to Blancspot for sports news when I could just go to ESPN and see it all on one page? Heck, if I just want football news, I can click on the football tab.
So the sports section wasn’t for me, so I figured that I would just read the headlines. Iran, Golf, Indonesian volcano, Oscar Buzz at Telluride, Suicides in Japan, Political Deadlock in Iraq, Soccer. Ugh, I know that there are interesting headlines, I just read them on some of my other websites. It’s not like I mind letting someone else tell me what’s important, I just don’t want to have to flip through a slow paced slide show to find out.
Once I got to an article that I found interesting though, the Blancpot writing was good, albeit brief. The articles are more like teasers for other websites, and there are links provided so you can see what the real news is, but I guess I don’t mind that so much. For example, in an article titled Culture – SNL Cast Shake-Ups, Blancspot hints at four new cast members arriving – it just doesn’t tell you who they are, or anything about them. You have to click on a link to a TV Squad article to find out.
A good thing about Blancpot is its integration with social media. After choosing a story, you can view the ongoing Twitter conversation about it, and even join in if you have something to say. Much of the Twitter is just spam, and a bunch of it is in languages that I can’t read, but it’s the idea that counts. (Note: Because of the recent API change to Twitter, most users, including myself can’t link in with their Twitter account. The Blancspot team, according to the iTunes page, is fixing this as we speak, so I won’t hold this against them.)
While its fans are going to laud that Blancspot is pretty and totally “reinvents the news”, I say that we are too fast for the app. If I wanted slow slide shows of the news with only half the information, I could just turn on my local NBC News affiliate. I choose the web for speed.
