American video game development company Valve Corporation has announced that their online gaming platform Steam has surpassed 30 million accounts. This is the platform’s 6th year in a row of over 100% growth in unit sales versus the previous year. This year they have seen almost 200% growth. Part of this year’s growth is because of the launch of Mac OS X support.

Steam supports over 1,200 games and it is estimated that they have a 70% market share of digital distribution market for video games. Game publishing companies that use Steam include id Software, EA, Activision, 2K Games, Ubisoft, Sega, LucasArts, Capcom, Rockstar Games, and Square Enix.

verizon logo 315x207 WSJ: Apple Readying iPhone For Verizon In Early 2011
Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE:VZ) is preparing to launch the iPhone on their network in early 2011 according to The Wall Street Journal. One of the reasons I believe it is because The Wall Street Journal has a close-knit relationship with Apple CEO Steve Jobs. Jobs has appeared at the AllThingsD (A Wall Street Journal spin-off blog) conference numerous times. This would finally put an end to the exclusive deal that Apple has with AT&T.

Apple is expected to sell a total of over 40 million iPhones this year. Apple is expected to start mass producing the new iPhone by the end of the year. Verizon and Apple have been meeting regularly to test the heavy data load that the iPhone would put on Verizon’s networks according to a Wall Street Journal source.

Google’s Android operating system has been spreading at a rapid pace. There are currently 10.9 million people using smartphones powered by the Google Android operating system as of August in this past year. A year earlier than that, about 866,000 people were using smartphones powered by Android. Apple is supposedly working on a CDMA version of their device through a contract with Pegatron Technology Corp.

ipad hero 270x270 270x270 Bad news, tablet PC makers, Apple has a huge lead on youSo you’re a big electronics company who wants to make a tablet PC to get in on that iPad glory?

Well, you might be in for it. According to analysts:

“We believe Apple’s lead in the tablet market will prove difficult to close by the onslaught of competing products coming over the next several quarters,” Whitmore said Monday in a research note obtained by Fortune. “Ultimately, we expect the slew of upcoming competition to fall flat from a user-experience standpoint while struggling to materially undercut the iPad on price.”

In other words, it appears that Apple has the upper hand when it comes to the tablet market. However, in my own opinion (and I am more of a writer than an analyst) usually the big guy never stays in power for too long. Look at Blockbuster. Look at Atari.

Eventually, we all have to learn to come in second place. Any idea on when it will happen to Apple?
