photo 266x400 Troubleshooting a Painfully Slow Cydia Update

Sometimes it seems that Cydia updates can take forever. For slower devices, it may be normal. But if you see errors while downloading or if the update takes more than five minutes, there may be a solution.

Before you start this method, you will need to have APT Strict installed. If you have CyDelete installed, then you already have this. Otherwise, make sure Cydia is set to Developer mode, search for it and install…

Now go onto your desktop computer and use the Terminal or Command Prompt to SSH (ssh root@iPhoneIPaddress) into your device. Run the command “apt-get update” and watch what happens.

The problematic source will appear after a moment with an incredibly slow update status. For me, this was iSpazio.

Now go into Cydia on your iPhone, and go to Manage > Sources and attempt to remove the slow source. If you can’t, look for it in Manage > Packages, tap Modify and then Remove. Respring.

If this worked, Cydia will load much faster (you may need to manually hit reload to get Cydia to update again). If it is still slow as molasses, you will need to use Cyfix.

Using a browser capable of downloading files (such as iCab Mobile) go here and download the deb file. Open it with iFile (it’s shareware, so you can get it free for now in Cydia) and in iFile, open it with the built-in Installer option.

Now go back to your desktop, SSH into your iPhone, and type “cyfix -l” (no quotes). If you don’t see your source, your problem may have been resolved already. If you do, continue.

Type “cyfix -d” and hit return. You will see the list of installed Cydia sources with a number next to each one. Type the corresponding number at the prompt, hit enter, and wait for Cyfix to work its magic.

Now type “respring” (no quotes) and hit enter. Load up Cydia and you should experience much, much faster loading times.

If this helps, let me know.

iphone jailbreak Apple Asks Federal Government to Put an End to Jailbreaking

According to NBC, Apple has filed a request to the Federal Government to stop “hackers” from jailbreaking the iPhone.

Even though jailbreaking and unlocking the iPhone had been officially made legal by the government back in July of 2010, Apple has still made an effort to halt jailbreaking. NBC reports Apple has told the U.S Copyrights Office the following:

Current jailbreaking technologies now in widespread use utilize unauthorized modifications to the copyrighted bootloader and operating system, resulting in the infringement of the copyrights in those programs.

It’s kind of ironic this move comes right after Sony filed a lawsuit against George Hotz (Geohot), infamous iPhone and PS3 hacker for jailbreaking the PlayStation 3.

Will Apple follow Sony and file lawsuits against iPhone hackers? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!

IMG 1000000286 266x400 FakeClockUp Makes Your iPhone Seem Faster

If you’re looking for a way to make your iOS experience seem snappier without any damaging overclocking hacks, then look no further. There’s a new package for the jailbroken iPhone called FakeClockUp that does just that.

The tweak will not change any hardware settings, but rather alters the UI animation speeds so that transitions and other animations will occur shorter or longer, whichever you prefer…

To get this tweak you will need add the source http://hitoriblog.com/apt/ to Cydia and you’ll be able to make your animations faster (or slower) to whichever specifications you’d like. I found 2x to be the maximum speed without losing the iOS feel.

You may notice actual improvements in speed and realize how much time is taken up by superficial animations to create the Apple experience on the iPhone. Actual load times will not change for apps, but rather the speed of which the app is scaled from icon to full screen, or speed by which the multitasking effects occur.

To me this made it seem like the apps loaded slower, although that clearly is not the case. If you try it out, let us know how it affects your experience.

Steve Jobs e1295280588460 Steve Jobs Takes a Medical Leave of Absence from Apple

Big news coming out of Cupertino today, Steve Jobs has requested, and has been granted a medical leave of absence. Apple’s website posted an email that Steve sent out to all Apple employees earlier today. His reasons stated for taking the leave is so that he can “focus on [his] health.”

As you may remember, it wasn’t too long ago that Steve took a similar leave when he experienced health issues related to his liver, that being almost two years ago to the day…

Apple CEO Steve Jobs today sent the following email to all Apple employees:

Team,

At my request, the board of directors has granted me a medical leave of absence so I can focus on my health. I will continue as CEO and be involved in major strategic decisions for the company.

I have asked Tim Cook to be responsible for all of Apple’s day to day operations. I have great confidence that Tim and the rest of the executive management team will do a terrific job executing the exciting plans we have in place for 2011.

I love Apple so much and hope to be back as soon as I can. In the meantime, my family and I would deeply appreciate respect for our privacy.

Steve

We’re not sure what type of impact this will have on Apple stock, if any at all, but since today is a federal holiday, any news about that will have to wait until tomorrow.

All of us at iDB wish Steve a speedy recovery, and we look forward to seeing the eclectic CEO back on top of his game.

iphone 3g unlocked e1295283341611 iPhone 3G on BaseBand 06.15.00 Unlocked for Life

It’s official. If you have an iPhone 3G on baseband 06.15.00 and you are unlocked , you better get comfortable. MuscleNerd confirmed in a recent tweet that since the iPhone 3G will not be receiving the 4.3 firmware upgrade, your iPhone 3G will remain unlocked indefinitely.

Now let’s not all panic, this only affects iPhone 3G users on the above mentioned baseband. If you are unsure of your baseband version, you can go to settings -> general -> about -> modem firmware.  For most of us this isn’t a huge deal, but to iPhone 3G users who unlocked using the 06.15 UltraSnow unlock, and have been experiencing GPS issues, this is devastating…

For 3GS users experiencing problems, The Dev Team is definitely aware of the GPS issue, and currently working on a way to downgrade your baseband with iOS version 4.3.

Do you have your 3G or 3GS unlocked and little or no GPS functionality? What are your thoughts on your iPhone being stuck unlocked forever? Sound off in the comments section below!
