You mad? Toshiba’s teaser site for their upcoming tablet line looks like any regular Flash website on a normal desktop web browser. Visit that same website from an iOS device such as the iPhone or iPad, and not so much.
While it’s obvious that the Flash aspects would be omitted from the iOS versions of the website due to Apple’s well documented lack of support for the plugin, it’s not the lack of Flash that has people talking this time…
The untethered society is becoming more of a reality each and every day, with the latest development being ubiquitous cloud printing from Google.
Google Cloud Print allows those of you on iOS devices to print directly from Google Docs Mobile or Mobile Gmail, over the air to any printer configured to use the service.

You don’t see many rainbow ponies in the wild these days. Some would say this is because they’re imaginary but I reckon it’s all a sinister plot by some global corporation which has realised the power that such majestic creatures can wield. That or I just need to take more of my medication. Regardless of this, it’s good to see a Rainbow Pony in the suitably named Rainbow Pony.
You have to guide the adorable little pony to safety too with the power of your finger. Guide Rainbow Pony across the finish line as fast as possible by holding your finger down and drawing a rainbow line across the screen creating a path. In a nod to Sonic, rings can help you. As well as other power ups, they can make you go faster, but avoid the mines in your path otherwise you end up rather sluggish in your movements. Fortunately there’s no death to be had here and the game solely revolves around achieving the fastest high score.
Besides Normal mode, there’s a Survival mode too where you have to avoid mines for as long as possible as just one collision ends the game. Time mode gives you one minute to achieve the furthest distance as a gentle twist on the familiar concept of the game.
Rainbow Pony is easy enough to get to grips with as you simply draw the line yourself. Even young children should be able to figure things out easily enough. The only frustration lies in situations where you’re going very fast. It’d be useful if the screen zoomed out a little giving you an extra moment’s notice to move out of the way of a mine.
Other than that minor failing, Rainbow Pony is a fun little game. Its graphics are typically old school but in a friendly nod to the 8-bit era with the music providing similar delights. Rainbow Pony is an inexpensive delight and rather enjoyable for such a simple concept.

News based on social media is quickly becoming all the rage. Just look at how apps like Flipboard have soared to unprecedented success by merely making it elegant and fun reading your entire social media stream. Looking to cash in on this success, Sobees is pushing out their own take on the social media magazine with NewsMix.
NewsMix is a combination social media magazine and RSS feed reader. You enter in your Twitter and/or Facebook account to pull in feeds from those sources. There is also the ability to pull down specific RSS feeds, or connect to a Google Reader account for even easier access. Once the app has some feeds, the magazine style feature comes into play. News will be broken down into categories like Politics, Technology, Sports, and so on. Tapping on the specific category takes you to sources dedicated to that genre. The last bit is videos, which play rather well in the app and also come in their own specific category.
Sadly, this is about where the cool features come to an end. I fed in one of my Twitter accounts and was met with mixed results on the categorization aspect. I had photos from friends showing up in the politics section, while status updates popped into the health section. It ultimately made the whole Facebook/Twitter integration almost pointless, as it was a jumbled mess where these feeds ultimately ended up.
Where NewsMix takes a hit is in making this app a beautiful experience. You may be sick of the whole page-flipping mechanic that the iPad has brought on, but it does help make things feel less electronic. NewsMix does make it nice to browse specific categories, but the overall feel of the app just doesn’t work for me. It is hard to shake the feeling that this is a blatant rip-off of the free Flipboard.
Compared to the free alternative that is out there, this feels bloated, less elegant, and not fully ready for primetime. The ability to do something like changing a backdrop, or read news in categories just does not amount to enough substance to justify the price tag. Unless your wallet is burning a hole in your pocket, it is best to save your money on this app.
