We’ve got another interesting product from Arkon to look at today, who sent me out a whole box full of their best sellers. And today on the block is the Arkon Removable Air Vent Mount.
The Arkon Removable Air Vent Mount is a phone mount that clips, via two black plastic alligator clips, to your car’s air vent, thus allowing you to access your smartphone from about arm height in your car. That’s pretty much all it is and all it does, and it may be the weakest model from Arkon I’ve tried yet.
Putting this together wasn’t hard at all–like the rest of the Arkon line it’s simple to handle and get ready to use. But the problems came when I tried to put this on the air vent. See, the clips are very close together, by design. Thus, trying to depress both clips and lock them into place on the vent was more than a little hassle. I actually managed to get one clip on and in place, and that was actually enough to hold the smartphone in place (once again represented by Chinavasion’s Sigma Quadband).
Special note: the clips are also not sufficiently robust to serve as a sun visor mount.
Anyway, I like the idea behind the Removable Air Vent Mount, but the execution just did not do it for me at all. I did get it to work, after a fashion, and it did work pretty well, but I really shouldn’t have to jury-rig something as simple as a phone mount.
But still, considering that Arkon only wants about twenty bucks for this (they’re having a sale right now to put them at fifteen bucks), it’s a pretty good solution, and you may have an easier time getting them to work in your car than I did. But aside from that, it’s not as good as some of the Arkons I’ve tried so far.
The Good
Low cost
Simple to assemble
Works well
The Bad
Not very effective
Difficult to put in place
Score 4 / 10
